Dental crowns have been around for a long time and are useful in restoring heavily filled or broken down teeth back to high levels of function and aesthetics. One of the main disadvantages (until now) is that they often seemed more time consuming and inconvenient with a need to come back for a second appointment.
1. For those who are time poor, crowns can now be done on the same day
For most of our patients the single biggest benefit of a CAD-CAM (computer aided design and computer aided manufacturing) crown is that it can be done in one appointment. This gives you a crown that looks as nice, feels as nice, and is as strong as a lab made crown but without having to have a second appointment two weeks later.
2. You don’t have to deal with gag inducing messy impressions
Instead of a rubber based impression material sitting in your mouth for 5 minutes a small camera scans and records your tooth and your bite in a few seconds.
3. No more temporary crowns
With lab made crowns you have a two week period to protect the tooth until the second appointment. The temporary can be rough to the tongue and can’t be chewed on heavily. With a single appointment CEREC crown you should be back chewing normally later that day.
4. Biocompatible, metal-free materials
CEREC restorations are made of ceramic porcelain that is compatible with your body. We use materials like EMax and Celtra Duo. Unlike restorations that use metal, there is no mercury or ugly grey lines at the base of the tooth near the gum line. They look great.
5. CAD-CAM crowns are Strong
You may think that dental crowns crafted in one dental visit are of lower quality than traditional crowns that were made by a lab. This is not the case. Before changing to CAD-CAM crowns our dentists used EMax crowns for most our lab made posterior teeth crowns. We still use EMax and a newer material called Celtra Duo for most our same day CAD-Cam crowns. It’s just that now our “lab” is on site.
